To be honest I've never really tried. A friend told me it worked with Viscosity and it worked for me. If you got it to work without, please let me know :)

Thank you for this very well written guide, got it working perfectly!
Anyway i am wondering if it is possible to connect to the server without viscosity?
I am not really familiar with VPN's and there are several options i can choose from when connecting to a VPN through the default OSX network preferences but i am not sure which one to use.
It works very well with viscosity though but i would love to know the logic behind using it instead of the default OSX vpn connection preference.

Hi Edwin, I checked it and ../vars certainly does not the trick while . ./vars does. Still thanks for the comment.

Better late than never: The command is "../vars" instead of ". ./vars". So there should be no space between the dots.

<a href="#comment-940" rel="nofollow">@Bas</a>
I see - it must be something in my exports file that needs me to reverse lookup. Thanks again for your time and tutorial. Before the VPN we were using Logmein on an XP box to then get on to our Linux NFS share to transfer files from our office to the workshop - grim.

I did as far as I remember not modify my /etc/hosts because I always use the VPN ip address of my server, even when I am at home I still connect my VPN. So Viscosity always connects to my VPN ip which is 10.0.8.1

<a href="#comment-914" rel="nofollow">@Bas</a>

Thanks - worked it out now. I updated etc/exports and added the OpenVPN server IP to my share. Now I can cmd+k and mount the NFS share. The only small snag is that I *have* to use my mac etc/hosts file to map server IP to the serverHame. If I dont do this I get an unable to connect (username/password error). So every time I connect, I have to make sure I've got the right IP (either normal LAN or OVPN IP) in my hosts file. This was an issue before open vpn - I just never had to worry about updating etc/hosts.

Are you able to connect to your ubuntu box without mapping in etc/hosts?

You should mount using the VPN ip. So something like 10.0.8.1 or something similar.

Nice howto - got OpenVPN working thanks to you! But what next? When I'm in my office I normally use cmd+k to mount my ubuntu NFS share. How do I mount that same share in finder over the VPN? am I missing something obvious?

Help much appreciated!

Hey, this is great! I really want to be able to do this. I've been searching for an answer to this very problem. So, I type away, and keep getting this message after I type any of the steps following . ./vars

Please edit the vars script to reflect your configuration,
then source it with "source ./vars".
Next, to start with a fresh PKI configuration and to delete any
previous certificates and keys, run "./clean-all".
Finally, you can run this tool (pkitool) to build certificates/keys.

Any ideas? I would love to do this.
