Special character shortcuts in word processor

Sometimes you need to work with a lot of special characters. In math when working with relations can be a pain when working in a word processor. I was looking in OpenOffice for a preference which makes it possible to use keystrokes to insert a symbol automatically. I could not find one.
The solution for this problem is to use the autocorrect capability of your word processor. Simply add a new combination for your new symbol.
